Description

Garlic Chives (Allium tuberosum) are a must-have for any culinary enthusiast, characterised by their flat, green leaves and a distinct garlic flavour. These perennial herbs not only elevate a variety of dishes but during Djilba (early spring), they showcase beautiful white flowers that attract pollinators and add aesthetic appeal to gardens. Apart from their culinary value, their dense growth habit can help suppress weeds, making them an excellent low-maintenance garden choice.

Suited to in-ground planting, pots, and vege/herb gardens, garlic chives prefer full sun but will tolerate partial shade. When planting in sandy soils, integrating a quality soil conditioner can enhance their growth and vigour. Regular watering is key, especially during Bunuru (summer). Harvest by cutting the leaves as required, taking care to leave the base intact for regrowth. To promote robust and flavourful leaves, a light application of balanced fertiliser during Djilba (early spring) is recommended.
