Description
Ficus elastica 'Ruby' is a striking variegated cultivar of the rubber plant, admired for its large, glossy leaves that blend shades of deep green, pink, and cream. The pink hues are most vibrant in new growth, gradually maturing into a rich tapestry of colour. This plant thrives in bright, indirect sunlight and can tolerate some direct sun, making it ideal for well-lit indoor spaces or sheltered outdoor areas in Perth. In its native habitat, it can reach heights of 12–15 metres and widths of 8–12 metres, but when grown in pots, it can be maintained at a more manageable size.
To care for Ficus elastica 'Ruby', plant it in a well-draining, rich potting mix. Water moderately, allowing the top couple of inches of soil to dry out between waterings. During the growing season (spring and summer), feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser every 4–6 weeks. Prune as needed to maintain the desired shape and size. This plant prefers warm temperatures and moderate to high humidity levels. Keep it away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. Note that Ficus elastica 'Ruby' rarely flowers indoors, and its small, greenish flowers are generally considered insignificant.
