Ficus elastica - BURGUNDY - Rubber Fig

Ficus elastica 'Burgundy' is a striking ornamental tree renowned for its large, glossy leaves with deep burgundy hues and prominent red midribs. In Perth's climate, it thrives in bright, indirect sunlight and can tolerate full sun, making it suitable for outdoor garden beds or patios. Outdoors, it can reach heights of 12–15 M with a spread of 8–12 M, but when grown in pots, it can be maintained at a more manageable size. The plant rarely flowers, and when it does, the blooms are small and insignificant. Its dramatic foliage adds a bold statement to any landscape.

For optimal growth, plant in a well-draining soil mix comprising peat moss, perlite, and pine bark fines. Water moderately, allowing the top few inches of soil to dry out between waterings to prevent overwatering. During the growing season (spring and summer), feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength every two weeks. Prune as needed to maintain the desired shape and size. This low-maintenance plant is ideal for Perth gardens, offering year-round visual appeal.
