Euphorbia cotinifolia - Tropical Smokebush

Euphorbia cotinifolia, commonly known as the Caribbean Copper Plant or Tropical Smokebush, is a striking ornamental shrub or small tree native to Mexico and Central America. It features oval-shaped leaves that emerge in a vibrant red hue and mature into a deep burgundy, providing a bold contrast against its pale stems. During the warmer months, particularly in summer (Birak to Bunuru), it produces clusters of small white flowers at the ends of its branches. This plant thrives in full sun but can tolerate light shade, making it suitable for garden beds, containers, or as a specimen plant in Perth's climate.

In Perth, Euphorbia cotinifolia prefers well-draining sandy or loamy soils with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. It's drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during dry periods, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot. Pruning in late winter or early spring (Djeran to Makuru) helps maintain its shape and encourages bushier growth. Due to its sensitivity to frost, it's best grown in sheltered locations or as a container plant that can be moved indoors during colder months.
