The Earth Star, known scientifically as Cryptanthus bivittatus, is a stunning ground-dwelling plant, this variety is admired for its distinctive alternating light and dark stripes on each leaf. The leaves captivate with a transformative palette, shifting from a deep bronze-green to a vivid purple-red as the temperatures drop during Makuru (winter).

This plant flourishes when nestled in a pot with a good quality well-draining potting mix and plenty of drainage holes. Though it is accustomed to dappled light, it does enjoy a good dose of sun but needs protection from harsh afternoon rays. Watering should be moderate, ensuring the soil remains slightly moist, and during Djilba (late winter to early spring), treat the Earth Star with a gentle, balanced fertiliser to maintain its vibrancy. As a bromeliad, the plant will flower and send out multiple pups, before the main plant dies off.
