Description
Camellia sasanqua 'Marge Miller' is a distinctive groundcover camellia originating from China and Japan. This unique cultivar is renowned for its prostrate, spreading habit, making it ideal for cascading over garden walls, mass planting as a groundcover, or spilling gracefully from containers. During Djeran (Autumn) to Djilba (Early Spring), 'Marge Miller' produces an abundance of soft pink, double blooms that contrast beautifully against its deep green, glossy foliage. Typically, it reaches a height of 30 – 50 cm and spreads 1 – 1.5 M wide, creating a lush carpet of colour and texture.
Thriving in morning sun to part shade, 'Marge Miller' prefers a position sheltered from the intense heat of the afternoon sun. Plant it in well-draining, acidic soil enriched with organic matter; using a potting mix specifically designed for camellias is beneficial. Maintain consistent soil moisture during hot, dry periods, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. During Makuru (Winter), when the plant's growth slows, reduce watering accordingly. Applying a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring can promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. Minimal pruning is required; however, light trimming after the flowering season can help maintain its shape and encourage denser growth. 'Marge Miller' is well-suited to Perth's climate and can be effectively grown in garden beds, as a groundcover, or in containers, offering versatility and charm to various garden settings.
