Barleria obtusa - Bush Violet

Barleria obtusa, commonly known as the Bush Violet, is a hardy, evergreen shrublet that typically grows between 30–75 cm in height and spreads up to 1 metre wide. Its sprawling habit makes it an excellent choice for ground cover or cascading over retaining walls. The plant features soft, dark green leaves adorned with fine hairs, giving them a slightly fuzzy texture. From late summer through autumn (Bunuru to Djeran), it produces a profusion of vibrant violet to deep purple flowers, each approximately 2–3 cm wide, creating a striking display in the garden.

Thriving in full sun to semi-shade, the Bush Violet prefers well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. It's relatively drought-tolerant once established but benefits from regular watering during extended dry periods. Pruning after the main flowering period helps maintain a compact shape and encourages more prolific blooming in the following season. This versatile plant is suitable for garden beds, rockeries, and containers, adding vibrant colour to various garden settings. Feeding with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring can promote healthy growth and abundant flowering.
