Description
Alcantarea odorata, commonly known as the Fragrant Alcantarea, is a striking evergreen bromeliad native to Brazil. This impressive plant forms a large rosette of silvery-blue, strap-like leaves that can reach up to 1.5 meters in diameter. The foliage's reflective quality adds a unique visual appeal to gardens, especially under moonlight. After several years, Alcantarea odorata produces a towering flower spike, extending up to 2 meters, adorned with pale to bright yellow, fragrant flowers. These blooms typically appear during the summer months (Birak and Bunuru), attracting bees, butterflies, and birds to the garden. This bromeliad is well-suited for use as a focal point in garden beds, large containers, or as part of a tropical landscape design.?
For optimal growth in Perth's climate, position Alcantarea odorata in full sun to partial shade. It thrives in well-drained soil and exhibits high drought tolerance once established. Regular watering is beneficial, but it's crucial to avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent root rot. Maintaining water in the central 'tank' formed by its leaf rosette is essential for the plant's health. This species is relatively pest-resistant, though occasional monitoring for mealybugs or scale insects is advisable. As a monocarpic plant, Alcantarea odorata will die after flowering; however, it often produces offsets or 'pups' at its base, allowing for propagation and continuity in the garden.?
