Description
The "Beefsteak" tomato, a prominent cultivar of Solanum lycopersicum, is the heavyweight champion in the tomato world. These big boys are easily recognisable by their large, meaty fruits that are often deep red in colour and can weigh up to a whopping 450 grams or more. Their dense, juicy flesh has a rich flavour, making them a favourite for sandwiches and salads where one slice can cover the whole bread or burger.
For a bountiful harvest of these chunky delights, it's best to plant them in large pots with a premium quality potting mix or directly in vege/herb gardens using a top-grade soil conditioner. They love the full sun and will need consistent watering, especially during the Bunuru (late summer) season. Feed them with a tomato-specific fertiliser to boost their growth and be prepared to stake these giants as they grow to support their weight. Typically, in about 85-90 days from planting, you'll be rewarded with ripe "Beefsteak" tomatoes, ready to beef up your meals.
