Description
Broad Bean (Vicia faba) is a sturdy plant primarily known for its culinary value. Its pods, containing nutritious beans, make a tasty addition to various dishes. While not especially ornate, its modest white flowers with black spots add subtle charm when they blossom in Makuru (winter) to Djilba (early spring).
Gardeners can grow Broad Bean in the ground, pots, or within vegetable/herb gardens. Staking or climbing support is necessary. For those planting in the ground, especially in sandy soils, it's essential to enrich the area with well-decomposed compost or organic matter to retain moisture and nutrients. Positioning the plant in a sunny spot, water it moderately; however, during cooler weather in Bunuru (summer) and Djeran (autumn), reduce watering. Annually, during Birak (early summer) or early Djilba (late winter to early spring), feed Broad Beans with a balanced, all-purpose fertiliser. For optimal pod production, a light prune after harvesting is recommended.
