Description
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Hawaiian Skies' is an evergreen shrub renowned for its large, single cerise blooms that add a vibrant touch to any garden. This cultivar typically reaches a height and width of 1.5 – 2.0 M, making it suitable for use as a landscape feature or as a container plant. The glossy, dark green foliage provides an attractive backdrop to the striking flowers, which bloom predominantly during the warmer months, from late spring through to autumn (Kambarang to Djeran).
In Perth's climate, 'Hawaiian Skies' thrives in full sun positions and prefers light, free-draining soils. Regular watering is essential, especially during the hot, dry summers, to maintain optimal growth and flowering. Applying a balanced fertiliser during the growing season will promote vigorous blooming. Pruning after the main flowering period can help maintain a desirable shape and encourage new growth. Mulching around the base of the plant can assist in retaining soil moisture and regulating temperature. While 'Hawaiian Skies' is not frost-hardy, it can be grown in pots and moved to a protected area during colder periods if necessary.
