Description

Hedera colchica 'Sulphur Heart', commonly known as Persian Ivy or Paddy's Pride, is a vigorous evergreen climber prized for its striking variegated foliage. The large, heart-shaped leaves feature a bold central splash of golden-yellow against a deep green background, adding year-round interest to shaded or partially sunny areas. In Perth's climate, it thrives when planted in garden beds, used as ground cover, or grown in containers and hanging baskets. This ivy can reach up to 8–12 M in height and width when left unpruned, but it can be easily maintained at a smaller size with regular trimming. It produces small, greenish-white flowers during autumn (Djeran) and late summer (Bunuru), followed by black berries that attract birds.

For optimal growth, plant 'Sulphur Heart' in well-drained, humus-rich soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. It prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate full sun in cooler conditions. Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. In Perth's hot summers, additional watering may be necessary. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring (Djilba) and again in autumn (Djeran) to promote lush growth. Regular pruning will help maintain the desired shape and size, making it an excellent choice for adding vertical interest or ground coverage in various garden settings.
