Description
Ficus benghalensis 'Audrey' is a striking tropical tree native to India, renowned for its velvety, deep green leaves and elegant form. In its natural habitat, it can reach impressive heights, but when cultivated in pots, it can be maintained at a manageable 1.5–2.5 M tall and wide. This makes it an excellent choice for garden beds or large outdoor containers in Perth's climate. The plant thrives in bright, indirect sunlight but can also tolerate full sun, provided it is gradually acclimatised. Its smooth, light-coloured trunk and broad canopy add a touch of sophistication to any landscape.
To care for Ficus 'Audrey', plant it in a free-draining soil mix enriched with organic matter. Water the plant when the top 5–7 cm of soil feels dry, ensuring it is not overwatered to prevent root rot. During the growing season (spring to early autumn), feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertiliser to support healthy growth. Regularly dust the leaves to maintain optimal photosynthesis and inspect for common pests like scale and mealybugs. Pruning in spring helps control its size and encourages a fuller shape. While Ficus 'Audrey' rarely flowers in cultivation, its lush foliage provides year-round visual appeal.
