Description
Euphorbia mammillaris, commonly known as the Corncob Cactus, is a distinctive succulent native to South Africa. It features upright, chalky green stems adorned with blunt, toothpick-like spines, giving it a unique appearance reminiscent of a corn cob. During late winter to early summer (Djilba to Birak), it produces small red to orange flowers at the tips of its stems. This plant is well-suited for outdoor cultivation in Perth, thriving in full sun to partial shade, and is ideal for garden beds, rockeries, or container planting.
In Perth's Mediterranean climate, Euphorbia mammillaris prefers well-draining, sandy or gritty soils. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, especially during its dormant period in winter. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's essential to ensure proper drainage. Fertilize lightly during the active growing season with a diluted cactus fertilizer to support healthy growth. Regularly inspect for pests such as mealybugs and treat promptly if detected.
