Description

Eggplant (Solanum melongena) 'Bonica' is a popular cultivar known for its high yield and early ripening. The plant features bushy, upright growth with large, glossy, deep purple fruits that are oval and approximately 16 cm long. During Djilba (Early Spring) to Kambarang (Late Spring), it produces attractive pale purple flowers with prominent yellow centres. 'Bonica' thrives in Perth's climate and is well-suited for cultivation in garden beds or large pots.

To cultivate 'Bonica' successfully in Perth's sandy soils, enrich the soil with organic matter to improve fertility and drainage. Position the plants in full sun to ensure optimal growth and fruiting. Maintain consistent moisture levels, avoiding waterlogging, by watering regularly and applying mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Once flowers appear, apply a fertiliser high in potassium to encourage abundant fruit production. Regular harvesting of mature fruits will promote continuous yield throughout the growing season.

Eggplants are harvested when the fruits are firm, glossy, and have reached the desired size. Using a sharp knife or pruning shears, cut the fruit with a small portion of the stem attached to prevent plant damage. In the kitchen, eggplants are versatile and can be grilled, baked, roasted, or incorporated into dishes like curries and stews, adding a rich, hearty texture to meals.
