Description
Dracaena draco, commonly known as the Dragon Tree, is a striking, architectural plant that adds a unique, exotic presence to any garden. Native to the Canary Islands and nearby regions, this slow-growing evergreen tree is valued for its sculptural form and thick, branching stems topped with rosettes of sword-like, blue-green leaves. Dragon Trees are especially suited to Perth’s climate and are ideal for garden beds or as a large, potted specimen for patios and entrances. Mature plants can develop a distinctive umbrella-like canopy, adding character to landscapes.
Plant Dracaena draco in well-drained, sandy or loamy soil and position in full sun to partial shade. It is drought-tolerant once established, requiring minimal water, but an occasional deep watering during Perth’s hottest months can help maintain its health. Apply a slow-release fertiliser in early spring (Djilba) to support growth. This hardy tree is low-maintenance and highly suited to xeriscaping, adding both beauty and resilience to Perth gardens.
