Description
Delosperma lehmannii, commonly known as Ice Plant, is a compact, evergreen succulent native to South Africa. It features fleshy, triangular, grey-green leaves arranged in a geometric pattern along trailing stems, forming a low-growing mat. In Perth, it thrives in full sun and is ideal for rockeries, garden beds, or pots. During late spring to early summer (Kambarang to Birak), it produces bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that add a splash of colour to the garden.
For optimal growth, plant in sandy, well-draining soil with added gravel or coarse sand. Water using the "soak and dry" method, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Apply a low-nitrogen fertiliser at the start of spring (Djilba) to encourage healthy growth. Prune lightly to maintain shape and remove spent flowers. Propagation is easily achieved through stem cuttings.
