Description

Goeppertia concinna 'Freddie', commonly known as the Zebra Plant or Elegant Calathea, is a tropical evergreen perennial native to South America. This cultivar is celebrated for its striking foliage, featuring elongated, lance-shaped leaves adorned with alternating light and dark green stripes, reminiscent of zebra patterns. The undersides of the leaves display a subtle pale green hue, adding to its visual appeal. Typically reaching heights and widths of 30–60 cm, 'Freddie' is well-suited for indoor environments, making it an excellent choice for pots and shaded garden beds in Perth's climate.

To ensure optimal growth, place 'Freddie' in a location with bright, indirect sunlight, avoiding direct exposure to prevent leaf scorch. Maintaining high humidity levels is crucial; consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a tray with water and pebbles to increase moisture around it. Keep the temperature consistently warm, ideally between 18–24°C, and protect the plant from cold drafts and winds. Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged, using distilled or rainwater to prevent mineral buildup. During the growing season (spring and summer), feed monthly with a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser to support healthy development. Regularly wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and maintain their vibrant appearance.
