Description
Bougainvillea 'Jezebel', commonly known as Bambino Bougainvillea or Dwarf Bougainvillea, is a compact, evergreen shrub that brings vibrant colour and unique foliage to gardens and containers. This cultivar typically grows to a height of 1.5 to 2 metres and spreads 1 to 2 metres wide, making it suitable for small gardens, patios, or as a feature plant in larger landscapes. 'Jezebel' is particularly noted for its attractive variegated foliage, featuring green leaves edged with creamy white margins, which provide year-round visual interest. The plant produces brilliant scarlet-red bracts that surround small, inconspicuous cream-coloured flowers. Blooming profusely from Djilba (early spring) through Bunuru (late summer), 'Jezebel' adds a lively charm to any space.
For optimal growth in Perth's climate, 'Jezebel' thrives in full sun positions and prefers well-draining loamy soil enriched with soil conditioner. Once established in the ground, it is very drought-hardy; however, when grown in pots, it requires regular watering during the warmer months to prevent the soil from drying out. Over-watering can reduce flowering, so it's essential to allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Light pruning after flowering encourages a bushier appearance and promotes further blooming. Due to its compact growth habit and vibrant blooms, 'Jezebel' is ideal for use as a groundcover, in hanging baskets, or as a low hedge. Gardeners should be cautious of the plant's mildly toxic sap and sharp thorns, which can cause skin irritation upon contact.
