Description
The Beetroot (Beta vulgaris) is prized for its vibrant red bulbs and edible, green foliage. Not only do gardeners grow them for their rich taste and nutritional value, but the green tops can also be consumed, offering a two-in-one harvest. While the plant itself doesn't produce conspicuous flowers, it’s the edible root that takes centre stage.
Perfect for ground planting, pots, or tucked away in vege/herb gardens, beetroots prefer a position with full sunlight to partial shade. They relish in well-draining soil, so if you have sandy ground, enrich it with compost or organic matter for better results. Regular watering ensures plump roots, especially during Bunuru (Summer) and Djeran (Autumn). A balanced fertiliser application during Djilba (Late Winter to Early Spring) will promote vigorous growth. No specific pruning is required for this biennial vegetable.
