Description
Alyogyne huegelii 'East Coast Gem', commonly known as Native Hibiscus, is an evergreen shrub native to Western Australia. This compact cultivar typically reaches a height of 1.5 meters and a width of up to 2 meters, making it an excellent choice for garden borders, informal hedging, or as a feature plant in native gardens. It is renowned for its abundant, silky dark purple to mauve, tulip-shaped flowers that bloom profusely from spring through autumn, with the main flush occurring during the warmer months. The deeply lobed, mid-green foliage provides an attractive backdrop to the vibrant blooms.
For optimal growth in Perth's climate, 'East Coast Gem' thrives in full sun to part shade positions and prefers well-drained soils, including sandy or loamy types. Once established, it exhibits good drought tolerance and can withstand light frosts. To maintain a dense and healthy form, it is advisable to prune the shrub after the main flowering period, encouraging new growth and further flowering. Applying a native plant fertiliser during the growing season will support vigorous development.
