Description
Camellia japonica 'Hawaii', commonly known as Camellia, Heart of Jesus, or Angel Wings, is an evergreen shrub originating from China and Japan. This cultivar is celebrated for its large, peony-form flowers that are pale pink, fading to white at the petal edges, with many petals exhibiting crimped and fringed margins, creating a delicate and intricate display. Blooming from Djeran (Autumn) to Djilba (Early Spring), 'Hawaii' adds a touch of elegance to gardens during these seasons. The plant typically reaches a height of 2.5 – 4 M and spreads 1.5 – 2.5 M wide, forming a medium-sized, spreading bush with dark green, glossy foliage.
Thriving in morning sun to part shade, 'Hawaii' prefers a sheltered position protected from strong winds. It flourishes in well-draining, acidic soil rich in organic matter; using a potting mix specifically designed for camellias is beneficial. During hot, dry periods, maintain consistent soil moisture, ensuring the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. In cooler months, particularly during Makuru (Winter), when the plant's growth slows, reduce watering accordingly. Applying a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring can promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. Minimal pruning is required; however, removing spent flowers and any dead or damaged wood after flowering will help maintain its shape and vigour. 'Hawaii' is well-suited to Perth's climate and can be grown in garden beds or large containers, making it a versatile and attractive addition to various garden settings.
